Janet Levy: Haus

Text by Susanna Koeberle

Janet Levy is an American-Swiss sculptor and curator who lives and works between Los Angeles, Zurich and Mexico City. Her work focuses on the physical exploration of stone. She carves, binds and hangs stone often in combination with other materials such as rope, chain, shells, branches, metal, found objects and cast bronze. Referencing a physical force in nature to convey the emotions of underlying pressures, tensions, desires and sexuality, she creates abstract sculptures and installations that emphasize the hidden. Crossing the arts with science, she conducts extensive research on thematic subjects, including mythology, geology, zoology to inform her sculpture practice. Essential to her process is gathering and collecting materials from local sources. Levy continues to explore the enduring focus within her practice: to make the invisible visible.
